As a start-up entrepreneur, when is it time to hire a PR firm to assist with your promotion and marketing communications? Spin Sucks author Gini Dietrich explores the answer to this question, detailing the relationship between entrepreneurs and PR professionals, using real-world examples of clients she’s encountered in her work. She concludes with a few simple tips to help both the entrepreneur and the PR professional identify the ideal working relationship.

Dietrich stresses the importance to entrepreneurs of not hiring a PR firm until they are ready – meaning the product is go-to-market ready, operations are functional, and there is a clear, forward-thinking strategy. She also provides tips for PR professionals to consider when taking on an entrepreneurial client: making sure the client is committed and available for regularly-scheduled strategy meetings, and that they are truthful and forthcoming in all business matters, including a willingness to share all data and business plans. Overall, clients should work collaboratively with the PR firm, treating the agency employees as a true partner in a mission for start-up success.

Our viewPoint

Dietrich brings up an excellent point, one that should be contemplated more often by both companies and PR agencies: we can become so consumed with the details of the work, and what we need to do, that we often don’t stop to consider if we should. If some of the building blocks Dietrich mentions are not in place, it is nearly impossible (or at the very least, makes everyone’s job that much more difficult) to establish a relationship, and successfully promote a product. Everyone’s reputation will suffer from a mass-marketed product that is simply not ready for promotion. Time is a limited and valuable resource – it benefits both parties involved to make sure the foundation is set for a successful working relationship.
